I’ve always been partial to apples when it comes to snacking on fruit.

Oranges are a close second.

There are some really great reason to have apples as a healthy snack. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants and flavanoids. Antioxidants may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Flavonoids, like other antioxidants, do their work in the body by corralling cell-damaging free radicals and metallic ions.

Another really great reason? They are delicious!

I stumbled upon this awesome idea from Super Healthy Kids which is a “mom” blog I guess you would say and even though I’m not a mom, I still have a picky eater in the house and “weird” foods can be looked upon with great suspicion.

But foods like apples sprinkled with cinnamon and a bit of coconut sugar, that’s pretty normal, right?

Why cinnamon?

Cinnamon is one of the tastiest and healthiest spices on the planet. It can lower blood sugar levels and reduce heart disease risk factors.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CEYLON AND CASSIA CINNAMON?

When you eat cinnamon it’s good to choose the Ceylon variety over the Cassia. With the Ceylon cinnamon you can safely consume up to two and a half teaspoons (5 grams) whereas with the Cassia you are limited to  one teaspoon (0.5 to 2 grams). This is because Cassia cinnamon contains high amounts of coumarin, which has been linked to some health conditions.

Considering we are trying to achieve a healthy apple recipe here, it think it best to recommend the Ceylon cinnamon.

CINNAMON APPLE SNACKS

These healthy cinnamon apples taste like a pastry-less pie. 😉

Way back before I had this blog I used to simple sprinkle cinnamon right on top of some sliced apples. Then I would drizzle a bit of almond butter on top.

This method improves on that. The slices of apple in placed a baggie along with a little bit of coconut sugar. Close the bag and give it all a good shake. Everything gets nicely coated.

Pop the whole bag into the fridge and you will have a crisp, tasty snack ready for eatin’.

Mmmm. 🙂

I’m happy to announce that these have become a staple in our house. A bag is rotating in the fridge on a regular basis and we never seem to tire of them.

By the way, dipping in almond butter is mandatory.

Let me know if you try these!

Enjoy. 🙂
